Porcelain vs. Ceramic Tile: How Are They Different?

Tile is a popular building material because of its versatile uses and beautiful appearance. It is known for its durability and functionality in an array of projects. Porcelain and ceramic tile each have unique traits to consider when selecting your materials. By comparing these two popular tile options side by side, you can select the right supplies for your finished project.

Which is more Durable?

When durability is a priority, porcelain tile is a top pick for many flooring projects. Porcelain tile is created using a unique blend of clays and fired under extreme heat. This results in a tile that can withstand great pressures. Different grades of glazed tile will be rated with a Porcelain Enamel Institute rating or PEI rating. Our trained staff can help you compare PEI ratings on different porcelains to determine the right strength for your specific commercial flooring needs.

Where can Each Type Be Used?

Porcelain is a very dense flooring material and is often applied in high foot-traffic areas such as:

  • Commercial business settings
  • Manufacturing facilities
  • School or office buildings
  • Healthcare facilities

Ceramic tiles are generally not as heavy or thick as porcelain-made tile. When our clients want to implement tile for more architectural or aesthetic purposes, ceramic tiling may be a more preferable option. Tiles made of ceramic are more suited for precise angular cuts which allow for an array of appealingly design options.

Is One More Functional Than the Other?

When looking for the ideal tile, function is a key component in making the right selection. Ceramic tile is typically much thinner than porcelain tile. This makes it much easier to install. Porcelain tiling can pose a unique challenge in its solid construction. While porcelain tile is considered very durable, its weight can be a deterring factor if it is too load bearing for a construction project.

On the other hand, porcelain tile is nonporous making it a wise fit for areas that are subject to water like:

  • Large Entryways
  • Commercial kitchens
  • Public Restrooms
  • Locker rooms and showers
